I purchased my 1993 Savage here in Japan in May 2000 with only 4900km on it. From what I understand -is that until recently it was difficult to obtain a motorcycle license in Japan for motorcycles above 400cc (harder test), so Suzuki Japan included the LS400 in their product line only here in Japan. I don't know why they decided to make it chain driven; perhaps only to make it that much more "different" than the LS650. Unfortunately, the Savages are no longer available in Japan as their popularity decreased. The most popular type here are the "crotch-rocket" style bikes (especially the ones where the handlebars are below the top of the gas tanks) and some strange varieties which look like a crosses between the enduro and motorcross bikes. I suppose those do lend themselves better to weaving in and out of the traffic here. The laid-back style of the Savage including "choppers" are often called "American style" by the Japanese. Of the "American-style" bikes Harley Davidson seems to be the most popular here. (But of course our Savages are Hardly Davidsons!)
